Leadership in a Natural Resources Context (LNRC)

This 5-day workshop provides an in-depth introduction to leadership built around multiple themes: leadership differs from position, leadership occurs at all levels of an organization, anyone can develop and exhibit excellent leadership behaviors, each individual has a unique style of leading, and understanding one’s inherent preferences for interacting with others, processing information, making decisions and approaching tasks helps to develop the self-awareness and self-confidence to lead. 
Content of the workshop includes:

     - In-depth exploration and application of Myers-Briggs
       Psychological Type as a basis for understanding
       personal preferences for interacting with others, processing
       information, making decisions and approaching tasks
       (including strategies for effective communication and
       leadership when your preferences differ from those of others)
     - Introduction to models of leadership and their applicability to the natural resources context
     - Leadership as a relationship; mentoring
     - Decision making, dealing with change
     - Leadership and effective teams
     - Generational change in the workplace

Tuition: $1,195 (includes 2 books, course notebook, personalized Myers-Briggs report. Offered one or more times per year at a different locations, or on demand at a location of the client’s choice. Anyone can host this workshop by providing a suitable training room and committing to sending enough participants to the workshop to ensure a viable workshop. Cancellation/refund policy: Participants whose tuition has been paid and then drop out of the class will be eligible for a refund of tuition minus $200 to cover costs incurred by the provider unless they find a substitute to take their place in the workshop.

 

Advanced Leadership in a Natural Resources Context (ALNRC) Revised, New content!

This 3-day workshop provides in-depth, individualized development of leadership skills based on feedback from two widely used assessment tools: the DRiV assessment, and the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI; a 360-degree assessment of leadership behaviors). Participants construct a detailed leadership development plan throughout the workshop. 
Content of the workshop includes:         
    - Presentation of the DRiV model and interpretation of individual results on 
      the instrument that assesses factors that drive or drain you.
    - Interpretation of feedback from the LPI, including strategies for improving participants’ abilities to model the way,
      inspire a shared vision, empower others, challenge the process, and encourage the heart.

Tuition: $1,195 (includes 2 books, course notebook, personalized DRiV report, personalized Leadership Practices Inventory 360-degree leadership assessment.

Plain, Simple, and Concise Writing (PSCW)  Online version now available! Call or email for details.

The in-person version of this workshop can be taught in 1-day or 2-day format. The course develops skills natural resource professionals need to communicate technical information in language that nontechnical audiences can understand.  The workshop focuses on writing technical reports (including NEPA documents) in direct, concise, and simple language without losing important meaning and context.
Content of the workshop includes:
     - Identifying the purpose of your writing
     - Writing to support critical decisions
     - Organizing your document
     - How to make your writing more interesting and shorten your documents by up to 30%
     - How to make your writing less dense (using language that stakeholders understand)

Tuition: 2-day workshop--$515 if paid with credit card, $495 if tuition for groups of participants is paid as a group training (includes one book, course notebook); 1-day workshop--$395 if paid with credit card, $375 if paid as a group training. Participants should bring a laptop computer and one or more technical documents they have written or are writing to work on in class. Offered upon request at a location of the client's choice (minimum of 15 participants).

Virtual PSCW Workshops: The virtual version of PSCW consists of three 2-hour webinar sessions with approximately one hour of assignments to practice what you learn after each session. Tuition is $275/person if paid with a credit card and $250/participant if paid as a group training (minimum of 20 participants).

Plain, Simple, and Concise Writing Part 2 (PSCW2)

​This workshop builds on the concepts and techniques presented in Plain, Simple, and Concise Writing to help natural resource professionals write more clearly, concisely, and effectively.  The principles and techniques taught apply to writing any kind of document, from technical reports (including NEPA and ESA documents) to briefings, proposals, and public outreach documents in direct, concise and simple language without losing important meaning and context. Participants in this workshop should have previously taken Plain, Simple, and Concise Writing. Part 2 briefly reviews key concepts from the first workshop and then focuses on personal coaching of participants to help them become more efficient at revising existing documents and writing new documents. 

Workshop format and time commitment:
- One 2 to 3-hour webinar session
- 2-3 hours effort by each participant to revise an excerpt (300-500 words) of a document he/she has written.
  Instructors will provide personalized editorial comments on the revised document excerpt.
- One 30-minute personal video conference call with one or both instructors to discuss strategies for addressing issues
  noted in the document review and to improve the participant’s ability to implement the principles and techniques
  learned in the workshop.

Tuition: $275 if paid with credit card, $250 if tuition for groups of participants is paid as a group training.

Communication in Natural Resources (CNR)


This 3-day workshop provides participants with knowledge and skills to design and deliver messages that "stick," both in speaking and writing.

Content of the workshop includes:

    - How to communicate technical information to nontechnical audiences

    - Crafting and delivering messages that “stick,”  by developing messages that are simple, unexpected, concrete, credible, emotional, and that tell stories.

    - Plain, simple and concise writing for any kind of document

    - How to give more effective presentations and avoid "Death by PowerPoint"
     
Tuition: $995 (includes 2 books, course notebook)
Offered once per year at a different predetermined location or on demand at a location of the client's choice.

Understanding Yourself and Working with Others (UYWO)

This 2-day workshop provides an in-depth introduction to Myers-Briggs Psychological Type as a leadership and communications tool with application to effective teamwork, dealing with change, or conflict resolution (each workshop includes one of these three topics in addition to Myers-Briggs Psychological Type). 
Content of the workshop includes:
    - In-depth exploration and application of Myers-Briggs Psychological Type as a basis for understanding personal
      preferences for interacting with others, processing information, making decisions and approaching tasks
      (including strategies for effective communication and leadership when your preferences differ from those of
      others), plus one of the following topics:
    - Application of Myers-Briggs Psychological Type to effective teamwork, or
    - Assessment of style for dealing with change with correlation to Myers-Briggs type, or
    - Assessment of preferred style for dealing with conflict, with correlation to Myers-Briggs type


Tuition: $350 (includes one book, course notebook, personalized Myers-Briggs report, conflict style or change style assessment if used in the workshop).  Offered upon request at a location of the client’s choice (minimum of 12 participants).
